Hello!

Hello and welcome to The Curious Dragons community where we will be sharing our love of all things mathematical, tips and really cool resources for introducing your preschooler to maths and hopefully we will get to know you better.

The team behind The Curious Dragons is made up of two families who share a passion for maths and children’s learning. The Curious Dragons was born on a beach in Italy where our two families were holidaying. I was talking about how I wanted to introduce maths to my daughter and also the research that I had been doing into the methods used in Singapore to introduce children to maths so successfully. I was also bemoaning the fact that all the currently available resources for introducing preschoolers to maths were, in my opinion, fundamentally flawed, in that they didn’t focus on children’s understanding rather they focused on rote learning.

Why love maths?

I love how it allows us to make sense of the world around us, to communicate ideas and concepts concisely and elegantly and I love the creativity needed to solve mathematical problems. As a child I used to love playing number and logic games, who am I kidding I still love playing these games!

Why is it important for children to develop early maths skills and understanding?

We believe that developing maths skills helps children to develop their reasoning, problem solving, pattern spotting and ordering skills, it helps children to communicate accurately and find tremendous enjoyment in solving maths puzzles. But don’t just take our word for the benefits of early mathematical development, in a 2007 meta-analysis of 35, 000 preschool children across England, Canada and USA found that early maths skills were the strongest predictor for future success followed by reading and then attention skills.
