The Curious Dragons Start Adding

Hello!

This post is for the parents and teachers who have used The Curious Dragons Box 1 with their children, have seen their children’s understanding of number develop and are thinking “what next?”.

We thought we would come up with an activity that uses some of the resources from Box 1 to introduce addition.

The resources you will need for this activity are:

6 x green egg counters taken from Game 2 of Box 1.

6 x pink egg counters taken from Game 2 of Box 1.

1 copy of the board below, printed on card or paper.

Start by placing 1 green egg in the first box and one pink egg in the second box.

Read out the addition sentence to your child “one and one is”, then ask you child to place one green egg and one pink egg in the final box. The ask them to count the number of eggs in the final box and complete the addition sentence.

Next move on to 1 green egg and two pinks.

Then move on to 1 green egg and three pink eggs, you might want to ask your child to tell you what they think the answer will be before they place the eggs in the final box.

Then move on to 2 green eggs and 1 pink egg.

Then 2 green eggs and 2 pink eggs.

Then 2 green eggs and 3 pink eggs.

Then 3 green eggs and 1 pink egg.

Then 3 green eggs and 2 pink eggs.

Then finally 3 green eggs and 3 pink eggs.

Let us know how you got on with this activities.
